How this is calculated

Allowance left = overall allowance − everything paid into cash, stocks & shares, innovative finance and Lifetime ISAs this tax year. The Lifetime ISA room is the smaller of what's left of its £4,000 limit and what's left overall. If your ISA is flexible, money you withdrew and replaced in the same tax year doesn't count twice, so enter the net figure. Estimate, not tax advice.

How the ISA allowance works

One allowance, split however you like. Every tax year (6 April to 5 April) you can pay up to £20,000 into ISAs: all in one account, or spread across several, including more than one of the same type. It's one pool across every provider, and it's on you to stay within it, because providers aren't required to check what you've paid in elsewhere.

The Lifetime ISA is a limit inside the limit. Up to £4,000 can go into one Lifetime ISA each tax year, and it comes out of your £20,000. The 25% government bonus doesn't count towards it.

Use it or lose it. Unused allowance doesn't carry forward. On 6 April it resets, but everything already in your ISAs stays tax-free for as long as you keep it there.

Withdrawals usually can't be undone. With a non-flexible ISA, money you take out and put back counts as new money against your allowance. A flexible ISA lets you replace it in the same tax year. And if you're switching providers, use an ISA transfer. Withdrawing and re-depositing uses allowance.

Junior ISAs are separate. A child's Junior ISA has its own £9,000 limit, shared by everyone who pays in. It doesn't touch your own allowance.

The math this calculator runs:

Allowance left = £20,000
               − (cash + stocks & shares + innovative finance + Lifetime ISA)

LISA room = min(£4,000 − LISA paid in, allowance left)

The cash ISA limit is changing in 2027/28

At Budget 2025 the government announced that from 6 April 2027, people under 65 will be able to put up to £12,000 a year into cash ISAs. The overall allowance stays at £20,000, so the rest can still go into stocks and shares or innovative finance ISAs.

If you're 65 or over, you keep a £20,000 cash ISA limit from the start of the tax year in which you turn 65. The government also plans rules to stop the cash limit being sidestepped, including a ban on transferring from stocks and shares or innovative finance ISAs into cash ISAs for under-65s, and a charge on interest paid on cash held inside non-cash ISAs.

Budget 2025 also confirmed the £20,000 ISA, £4,000 Lifetime ISA and £9,000 Junior ISA limits will stay the same until 5 April 2031.

This is announced policy, not yet in force. Choose 2027/28 in the calculator above to plan ahead. Sources: HMRC Cash ISA limit reduction, ISA reform 2027 factsheet and Budget 2025 overview (para 2.3).

ISA allowance FAQ

What is the ISA allowance for 2026/27?

The ISA allowance for the 2026/27 tax year is £20,000. You can put it all in one ISA or split it across cash, stocks and shares, innovative finance and Lifetime ISAs. Up to £4,000 of it can go into a Lifetime ISA.

When does the ISA tax year start and end?

The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Anything you pay in up to and including 5 April counts towards that tax year’s allowance; from 6 April you get a fresh allowance.

Can I carry forward unused ISA allowance?

No. If you don’t use your full allowance in a tax year, HMRC guidance is clear that the unused part cannot be carried forward and added to the next year’s limit. Money already in your ISAs stays tax-free. Only the room to add new money resets.

Can I pay into more than one ISA of the same type in a year?

Yes. GOV.UK’s own example is £10,000 in one cash ISA, £3,000 in another cash ISA and £7,000 in a stocks and shares ISA in the same tax year. The exception is the Lifetime ISA: you can only pay into one Lifetime ISA in a tax year.

Does the Lifetime ISA count towards my £20,000 allowance?

Yes. Up to £4,000 a year can go into a Lifetime ISA, and it counts towards your £20,000 overall allowance. The 25% government bonus does not count towards it.

Does a Junior ISA use up my own ISA allowance?

No. A Junior ISA has its own separate limit (£9,000 for 2026/27), which belongs to the child. Paying into your child’s Junior ISA doesn’t reduce your own adult allowance.

What happens if I go over my ISA allowance?

Tell your ISA provider. If it happened in the current tax year, the excess and any gains on it can be removed to correct the error. If it happened in an earlier year, HMRC will contact you. Tax relief is lost on the over-subscription, but the rest of your ISA stays tax-free once it’s repaired. Payments over the Lifetime ISA limit must be removed and any bonus paid on them returned to HMRC.

If I withdraw from my ISA, can I put the money back?

Only if your ISA is “flexible”. Then you can replace cash you took out in the same tax year without using more allowance. With a non-flexible ISA, money you withdraw and put back counts as a new subscription. Lifetime ISAs and Junior ISAs can’t be flexible. Ask your provider which kind you have.

Is the cash ISA limit changing?

The government has announced that from 6 April 2027, people under 65 will be able to put up to £12,000 a year into cash ISAs, within the unchanged £20,000 overall allowance. Those aged 65 and over keep a £20,000 cash ISA limit, from the start of the tax year in which they turn 65. This is announced policy and is not yet in force.
